보살님께 오뜨꾸뛰르를 공양하다
전통 불화의 장엄한 도상 체계 위에 현대 패션의 조형적 미학을 결합하여, 과거의 공양 방식과 오늘의 미적 감각을 연결하는 작업이다. 고려·조선시대 불화 속 부처와 권속들이 당대 최고의 보배로 장엄되었듯, 오늘의 불보살에게는 오뜨꾸뛰르(Haute Couture) 의상이 새로운 공양물로 바쳐진다는 상상에서 출발했다.
전통 불화의 위계적 구성·금니 장식·석채 채색법을 유지하면서도, 하이패션의 조형미를 법의(法衣)로 재해석함으로써 신성과 세속, 고전성과 현대성이 한 화면 안에서 자연스럽게 교차한다.
이 시리즈는 불화가 사찰의 벽화에 머무는 성물(聖物)에 그치지 않고, 오늘의 세계 속에서도 살아 있는 시각문화를 이룰 수 있음을 탐구한다. 즉, 공양의 형식은 달라질 수 있지만 자비와 깨달음의 가치가 시대와 문화를 넘어 지속된다는 사실을 회화적으로 증언한다.
Offering Haute Couture to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas
This series merges the grand iconographic systems of traditional Buddhist painting with the structural aesthetics of modern fashion, bridging historical modes of devotion with contemporary beauty.
Just as the Buddhas and deities of the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties were adorned with the finest treasures of their time, I imagine Haute Couture as a new form of Gongyang (sacred offering) for the deities of today.
While strictly maintaining the hierarchical compositions, gold leaf (geum-ni), and mineral pigment techniques of the past, I reinterpret high fashion as beop-ui (dharma robes). Within a single frame, the sacred and the secular, the classical and the contemporary, naturally intersect.
This work explores how Buddhist painting can transcend its role as a temple mural to become a living, breathing visual culture in the modern world. It is a visual testimony that while the forms of offering may evolve, the values of compassion and enlightenment remain constant across all eras.
